Bauhaus in Brief

DThis tour attempts to vividly introduce pupils to the most important aspects of Bauhaus teachings and to redefine the often-experienced first thought of many young people: "What, we're going to a DIY store?" with the curious and amusing.

The tour takes place in the surroundings of Henry van de Velde's art school buildings and, starting from the "New Weimar" and the founding of the arts and crafts seminar, attempts to place the Bauhaus artistically and historically in the Weimar Republic.

Weimar Republic

From February 1919 to July 1919, the German National Assembly met in the newly created German National Theatre in Weimar and formulated a constitution, parts of which are still valid today. What happened in the city during these five months, where were important institutions?

The guided tour aims to shed light not only on the political but also the social-cultural environment of the Weimar years and, starting with the founding of the first German republic, to give an insight into the years when Germany was literally dancing on the volcano.

We start at Theaterplatz at the memorial plaque of Walter Gropius and then move towards the Weimarhalle, the largest building project of the 1920s. We then walk past the Residenzschloß towards the Platz der Demokratie (Democracy Square), where the first Thuringian parliament was located. Our tour continues past the Tempelherrenhaus to the art school buildings where the State Bauhaus was active. Our tour ends there
.

*There is also the possibility that I can guide you in the » Haus der Weimarer Republik if you book in advance.

 Third Reich Tour

WWeimar was more closely associated with National Socialism than any other place in Germany. As early as 1930, the NSDAP was part of the state government and strove to transform Thuringia into the Reich's model district. For Weimar as a Gaustadt, this meant that prestigious building measures were initiated that clearly characterise the cityscape to this day.

This special city tour aims to make the traces of the period from 1930 to 1945 visible and to show you the importance Weimar had in the cultural policy of the Third Reich.

We start our tour at Theaterplatz at the German National Theatre and walk across Goetheplatz towards the former Gauforum. From there, we will walk along the former "X-Street" in the direction of the Marstall and end at the Marktplace.
